Live music and spoken word performances mark the start of Black History Month events in Haringey.
A major event at the Wolves Lane Horticulture Centre today (October 7) kicks off another year-long celebration of Black history and heritage in Haringey.
The Black History Haringey 365 (BHH365) launch event features musicians and poets.
A panel discussion chaired by Haringey Council’s director of culture and communities, Kenneth Olumuyiwa Tharp, will reflect on the 50 years since the Black Parents Movement was established in north London.
This movement, led by Black parents, advocated for better educational opportunities, resources, and support for their children.
Panellists will include Roxy Harris, chair of the George Padmore Institute, Black Rootz’s Paulette Henry, and media executive, satirist, and writer Nels Abbey.
The launch event is open to everyone.
Council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet said: “We are proud our Black History Haringey 365 programme ensures that Black history stays at the top of the agenda in our borough all year round.
“It’s too important to highlight for just one month of the year.”
The programme features over 60 events throughout the year, including craft workshops, film screenings, and walking tours, allowing residents to explore Black history in Haringey.
All event listings and learning resources are available on the Black History Haringey 365 webpages at haringey.gov.uk/leisure-parks-culture/culture/black-history-haringey-365/black-history-haringey-365-events.
