Police were called to the rail line near Rugeley Trent Valley station in Staffordshire around 6.30am today (March 20).
Paramedics also arrived but a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
There was widespread disruption to train running between Euston and the Midlands as a result of the incident, National Rail reported.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the line near Rugeley Trent Valley railway station at around 6.30am today (20 March) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
