Surrey Police responded to racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage to the Epsom Islamic Centre on Hook Road on Tuesday (October 14) morning.
Police say graffiti was spray-painted on the side of the building at some point between 9pm on October 13 and 1.20am on October 14.
The Epsom Islamic Centre is “deeply saddened” by this incident, which follows a previous one on August 29 this year.
Epsom and Ewell Borough Commander Inspector Tommy Pearson said: “This behaviour is unacceptable, and our team is working closely with leaders at the Epsom Islamic Centre to support the community and ensure everyone feels safe attending the mosque.
“Yesterday afternoon, local officers visited the mosque to engage with worshippers and carry out enquiries in the surrounding area.
“We continued patrols of the area last night and this morning, and we are consulting with the mosque and local authorities to assess whether further crime prevention measures can be put in place.”
In a statement uploaded on social media, the mosque said: “This is the second time in recent months that our mosque has been targeted, following a previous incident on 29th August 2025.
“In addition to these acts of vandalism, members of our community have experienced an increase in Islamophobic and racially motivated abuse in recent months.”
The mosque urged members of the community to “remain vigilant” and report incidents to the local authorities.
They added: “Epsom has long been known as a welcoming and inclusive place, and it is deeply regrettable that the actions of a small number of individuals seek to undermine that spirit.
“We call upon people of all backgrounds to stand together in rejecting hatred and intolerance, and to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, dignity, and mutual respect.
“It is only through unity and collective resolve that we can ensure acts of hatred and division have no place in our society.”
An investigation has been launched, and anyone with information should contact the police, quoting PR/45250125179 or calling 101.
Helen Maguire, the Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, condemned the act and assured the mosque that she and her team “take your wellbeing and right to worship safely very seriously”.
She added: “There is no place for Islamophobia in our community, and we should be united in rejecting such hateful acts of prejudice.”
