Epping Ongar Railway in Essex says it has reported spooky sightings of ghouls and skeletons on tracks and platforms during the evening hours.
Nick Arthurton, general manager at Epping Ongar Railway, said: “We’ve always had a few bumps in the night, but this is something else entirely.
“Our evening trains have been particularly lively, with spectral passengers attempting to ‘boo!’ our conductors and bony figures trying to ‘rattle’ our drivers.
“It’s all very… spirited.”
The mischievous apparitions are said to have been seen rattling doors and even trying to “borrow” biscuits from the staff room.
Helen Drew, a volunteer and the railway’s chief ghostbuster, said: “While their intentions seem to be more playful than malevolent, we do need to get things back to normal before they start trying to drive the trains themselves.”
In response, the railway is inviting ghostbusters of all ages to join its “Ghoul-Busting Expeditions” during Fright Week, which runs from October 25 to 31.
Participants are encouraged to dress in spooky costumes and help chase away the spirits using their loudest “boos” and “hisses.”
The Epping Ongar Railway is the longest heritage railway in Essex and is operated entirely by volunteers.
Its mission is to educate, enjoy and preserve the heritage of the Epping Ongar Railway … even for ghouls and skeletons!
