On the other side, the coin bears the official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with an inscription of her name and titles, along with “D·G·REG·F·D” and the year, 2016.
The coin is one of several Peter Rabbit 50p designs released by the Royal Mint over the years, each showing a different aspect of the character’s “cheeky personality, lovable appearance and brave but naughty nature.”
The Peter Rabbit character was created by Beatrix Potter in an illustrated letter to a sick child in 1893.
The story became one of the best-selling children’s books on record.
The Royal Mint described Peter Rabbit as the “most famous and well-known character”.
The coin was designed by Emma Noble, who has brought Beatrix Potter’s characters to life on coins and previously worked on designs commemorating Remembrance Sunday and the 60th anniversary of the late Queen’s coronation.
