In a bid to shine a spotlight on some of London’s “less well-known and independent inns”, Time Out has produced a list of 50 watering holes that are some of the best on offer.
At number five The Britannia in Ironmonger Row, Shoreditch, has been given a five-star recommendation.

According to Time Out, it “isn’t like other Shoreditch pubs” and despite being “one of London’s best boozer secrets”, they aren’t gatekeeping this spot.
The family-run pub was built in 1939, but the site has been home to a traditional English pub since 1842.
The Pride of Spitalfields is listed at number nine, another Shoreditch pub to make it on the list.

Located in Heneage Street, it has also been five-star rated.
A modestly-sized pub, Time Out claims that customers often make their way outside the venue and recommends asking about its late resident cat, Lenny.
In Barnes Street, Limehouse, a Victorian pub was placed at number 19.

The Old Ship describes itself as “a proper East End boozer”, showing drag acts and LGBTQ+ cabaret performances.
It promises an “always warm welcome” to visitors, displaying the message in a sign above its door.
According to Time Out, you can typically hear the venue before seeing it.
The Raglan in Walthamstow has been ranked at number 29.

Located in Shernhall Street, it has been described as a “true Walthamstow original”, whilst serving south Asian cuisine.
Just behind it, the Palm Tree in Mile End has been placed at 30.
The pub is grade-listed and offers live jazz nights that are “well worth witnessing” from its venue in Grove Road.
The last east London pub to make it onto the list of top 50 pubs in the capital is found in Commercial Road, Stepney.

At number 39, The George Tavern is also a musical boozer.
According to its website, the Tavern is mentioned in the writings of Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys and Geoffrey Chaucer.
Today, it doubles as both a pub and a live music venue.
