Havering Council has granted planning permission for Drapers’ Multi Academy Trust to install new fencing and gates at the front of Drapers’ Academy and Drapers’ Maylands Primary School.
The fencing will line the courtyard between the two schools – which is currently open and accessible from Settle Road – as well the front of the primary school.
The planning officer’s report concluded that the proposal would “not result in significant harm” to the street scene, given that the proposed fencing outside Drapers’ Maylands is set to replace existing fencing.

New sections across the open plaza will be painted green, which the planning officer says will “mitigate their impact” on the street scene.
Parking was also not considered to be an issue, according to the report, as the fencing is not located near any vehicle access points.
Instead, multiple pedestrian gates will provide access to the plaza, which are proposed to be manually operated with an intercom through to reception.
The proposal, which aims to “improve safeguarding” at the schools according to the planning documents, was approved with conditions including that works must be carried out within three years.
