The borough’s regeneration initiatives align closely with the broader goals of the London Growth Plan, which aims to foster economic resilience, innovation and job creation across the capital.
Accompanied by Laura Citron OBE, CEO of London and Partners and Dr Angela Kukula, CEO of MedCity, Dawber toured key development sites hosted by Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of the Council, to see how Sutton is set to play a pivotal role in shaping London’s economic future.
“It was a pleasure to visit Sutton Council and see the fantastic work taking place,” Dawber said.
He added: “Growth increasingly happens in hubs outside the city centre, like here in Sutton and the Mayor and I will continue to support new growth clusters as they create jobs and opportunities for Londoners. Together, we can build a better, fairer and more prosperous London for all.”
The Deputy Mayor’s visit focused on two key initiatives.
The first is the expansion of the London Cancer Hub. This landmark project will transform a five-hectare site next to the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute for Cancer Research into a world-class cancer research and innovation centre.
This collaboration between Sutton Council, Aviva and developer Socius promises to deliver one million square feet of space dedicated to research, treatment, innovation and amenities for residents and visitors.
Laura Citron highlighted Sutton’s key role in the London Growth Plan: “The borough has all the potential to lead the future innovation of our capital, and we are committed to working together to unlock even more investment pathways for businesses and residents alike.”
In addition to the London Cancer Hub, the regeneration of Sutton town centre was also on the agenda.
The Council’s development partner, Generate Kajima Regeneration Ltd, will refurbish sites like Oru Sutton and the St Nicholas Centre, creating a new Civic Hub with enhanced retail, leisure and public spaces.
Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We are ambitious to do more and look forward to working with the London Mayor and the government to continue this work.’’
Dr Angela Kukula, CEO of MedCity, also noted the importance of Sutton’s role in the city’s growth: “Projects like the London Cancer Hub demonstrate the crucial role of life sciences in driving the capital’s economic growth and innovation.”
