The draft proposal put forward by Lewisham Council would see part of Deptford High Street closed to cars from New Cross Road to Hamilton Street every day during set hours.
The area of the high street is currently pedestrianised three days a week for the markets.
The plans come after two years of feedback from residents, businesses, traders, community groups, and visitors.
In 2023, a survey of more than 750 community members revealed a majority wanted more pedestrianisation and public space improvements.

An on-street poll in December 2024 showed 93 percent of people were walking, cycling, or using public transport to reach the area, with more than 70 percent planning to spend money in high street shops and markets.
Since September 2024, the council has worked closely with businesses and traders to understand their priorities and specific needs for the proposed improvements.
A survey, three workshops, two drop-in sessions, and ongoing meetings and site visits were conducted as part of this effort.
The feedback guided the design proposal.
Alongside pedestrianisation, the plans include new greenery, safety features, better waste management, improved street cleanliness, and opportunities for businesses and the community to utilise the new space.

The design also accommodates parking and access concerns raised by businesses and traders.
The council believes these improvements will make the area more welcoming, accessible, and exciting, attracting more people to the high street for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Immediate steps have already been taken to address concerns about safety and cleanliness on the high street.
The council has commenced a wider programme to tackle fly-tipping, improve waste management, address vandalism, and fix street lighting issues in the area.
As part of the proposal, residents, businesses, traders, community groups, and visitors are encouraged to share their views by completing a survey before Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
There will also be in-person sessions to discuss the improvements and speak directly with the council team.
Deputy Mayor Louise Krupski, Lewisham Council’s councillor responsible for environment, transport, and climate action, said: “As we look to the future of town centres, we want to work with the community at every stage to make sure our improvements are designed by and for local people while ensuring no one is left behind.
“With more than 60 per cent of Lewisham residents using public transport for commuting, and many walking or cycling as part of their daily routines, we’re focusing on making it easier for them to travel actively, safely, and sustainably while also creating more space for people to enjoy what the high street has to offer.”
