Danson Dry Cleaners at 266 Sherwood Park Avenue is part of a varied shopping parade which includes convenience stores, a vets, a betting shop, a barbers and food establishments such as a chicken shop, a fish and chip bar and a Chinese takeaway.
It is within a mixed use area, with residential properties located above the various commercial units along the parade.
Last month, the dry cleaners applied to Bexley Council to change its current use to that of a micro pub, prompted by the upcoming retirement of Danson’s operator in September.
Planning documents state: “The applicant, her son, will take over the premises and establish a new business that aligns with his professional experience in hospitality.
“This transition ensures continuity of local enterprise while introducing a fresh, viable use that complements the parade.”
They also state the proposal “aims to enhance its contribution to the local economy and community, while remaining respectful of the site’s physical character and surrounding context”.
As well as making minor alterations to the interior of the commercial unit which includes the construction of a bar, the planning application also seeks to replace a shed at the rear of the property with a new shelter that will serve as a designated smoking area.
According to the proposed layout plans of the new pub, the bar will have enough space to seat five customers and there will be tables and chairs for 32 more customers on the floor. These plans also suggest the new drinking establishment will be called “The Dog House”.
Internal walls and glazing will also be upgraded to meet noise attenuation standards, and background music will be played at a low level to “preserve neighbouring amenity”. The proposed opening hours are 12pm to 10.30pm everyday.
The planning application is currently being reviewed by Bexley Council’s planning department, which has set a deadline of September 11 by which date it needs to have issued its decision.
