70 firefighters tackled the blaze in an industrial estate on Willoughby Drive off Rainham Road South around 2pm today (April 6).
While over 50 people spotted the chimney of smoke rising off three containers, burning vehicles and scrap metal and called the fire service, only a few saw the fire itself.
Two were Jake Piercy and Yedis Drone Shots, who flew their drones above the blaze to get a unique view of the inferno.
Fortunately, there were no injuries thanks to the efforts of the firefighters who removed two gas cylinders avoid them exploding.
After over two hours they managed to bring the fire under control around 4.20pm, making use of a 32-metre turntable ladder to bring water down from above.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Crews from Dagenham, Barking, Wennington, Hornchurch, Romford and surrounding fire stations were all involved.
Station Commander Mel Anderson, who has been at the scene, said: “This was a very visible fire and it has been producing a lot of smoke.
“Whilst the smoke has now greatly reduced, we advise people in the area to continue to keep their windows and doors closed at this time.”
He added: “We also request that drivers avoid Rainham Road South with road closures in place whilst this incident remains ongoing.”
