These works will last over two weeks and are expected to cause travel disruption to many in the south of Croydon.
Essential maintenance Shirley Hills Road crossing between Coombe Lane and Gravel Hill tram stops later this month. Maintenance will begin on Saturday, April 5, and finish by Friday, April 18, with services resuming on Saturday, April 19.
During this time, trams will not operate between Sandilands and New Addington tram stops. These stops include Lloyd Park, Coombe Lane, Gravel Hill, Addington Village, Fieldway, King Henry’s Drive and New Addington.
Engineering teams will work to minimise disruption as much as possible, while trams will continue to run as usual between Wimbledon and Beckenham Junction / Elmers End tram stops.
During the closure, a replacement bus service will cover tram stops between New Addington and East Croydon. However, due to the closure of Coombe Lane/Gravel Hill for these works, there will be no service at the Lloyd Park tram stop.
Additional essential maintenance will also take place on the New Addington branch. This includes resurfacing sections of the carriageway, track maintenance through the Sandilands tunnel, work at King Henry’s Drive roundabout, and repairs at the Lloyd Park tram stop crossing.
Other work planned includes highway repairs, vegetation maintenance, and platform refurbishments at various locations on the branch. TfL aims to complete all of this essential work during the closure to minimise future disruptions for customers.
These works are part of TfL’s programme to renew the tram infrastructure across South London. Navid Golshan, TfL’s General Manager for London Trams, said: “This planned maintenance is vital to ensure we can continue to offer customers a safe and reliable service across the London Trams network.”
He continued: “As part of this closure we have also taken the opportunity to undertake some additional essential works with an aim to minimise the need for future closures. I would like to thank customers for their patience while this takes place and would ask anyone travelling to plan ahead, allowing plenty of time for any journey.”
Despite the disruptions, the Hopper fare will still be available for adult pay-as-you-go customers. For £1.75, passengers can make unlimited journeys on buses and trams within one hour of touching in, meaning no extra costs during the works.
Temporary changes and travel advice will be displayed at local tram stops. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options.
