Around 70 firefighters were called to the fire at 3.34am today (August 4) at a commercial building on Cornhill Road in the City of London.
The blaze broke out in a basement room of a seven-storey office building.
Ten fire engines and a 32-metre turntable ladder were sent to the scene, with crews from Dowgate, Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Dockhead, and surrounding stations attending.
There have been no reports of injuries.
Station Commander Duncan Rees, who was at the scene, said: “Due to the location of the fire, which was in the basement of the property, extra resources were called to the scene early on in the incident as a precaution.
“However, firefighters worked efficiently to bring the fire under control promptly and prevent the fire spreading further into the building.”
Crews remain at the scene damping down hotspots.
Cornhill remains closed today, and people are advised to avoid the area.
Firefighters were first alerted to the fire due to a smoke alarm that started sounding.
The fire was brought under control by 4.52am.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson added: “This incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms, particularly if a fire occurs at a time of day when people are unlikely to be present to report it directly to us.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
