Firefighters were called to Commercial Road, in Shadwell, shortly after 6am on Saturday (January 3), where part of a ground floor shop was alight.
Flats above the shop were not damaged in the fire and three people – two children and an adult – were able to leave the building before fire crews arrived.
They were later treated by London Ambulance Service crews before being taken to hospital.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.12am on Saturday (3 January) to reports of a fire on Commercial Road, E1.
“We sent resources including an ambulance crew, paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART) and an incident response officer.
“We treated two children and an adult before taking them all to hospital.”
Fire crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch fire stations were able to put out the blaze by 7.33am.
The fire is believed to be accidental and was caused by the ignition of oil in a deep fat fryer, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Cooking should never be left unattended on the hob or grill – if you have to leave the kitchen, turn off the heat.
“Cooking with hot oil can be really dangerous and the risk increases when you start frying food more than once.
“All it can take is for you to become distracted for a few seconds and your cooking oil can quickly go up in flames.
“Never fill a pan more than one third full of fat or oil and make sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil – oil and water are a dangerous mix.
“If the oil starts to smoke, it’s too hot so turn off the heat and leave it to cool.
“It’s also really important to keep the hob, cooker hood and extractor fan clean too – built up fat and grease can ignite and cause a fire.”
