Gossip had spread on social media platforms including Nextdoor and local Facebook groups that a man tried to kidnap a woman yesterday (February 27) in the Collier Row and Rise Park areas.
The rumours sparked concern as people feared there may be a potential suspect on the loose.
However the Metropolitan Police believes that there has been no attempt of the act, although officers continue to investigate.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “In this early stage of our investigation, we can confirm that there has been no attempted kidnap of a woman.
“We do not believe there is any wider risk to the local community.
“Whilst our team investigate all circumstances, we ask that you do not speculate.”
