London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to the blaze in Church Lane at around 2.45pm yesterday afternoon (July 12) after receiving 70 calls.

A large fire had broken out at a shop that has two floors of flats above, causing black smoke to billow into the sky.

A loft conversion and a row of garages behind the building were on fire.

It took firefighters more than three hours to bring the blaze under control, with part of the loft conversion and the row of garages ultimately destroyed by flames.

Station Commander Stephen McGhie said yesterday evening: “We worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to further properties.

“Firefighters will remain at the scene for the next few hours to dampen down the area. We advise people avoid the area as the road is closed in both directions.”

Neighbours were told to keep their windows and doors shut while firefighters tackled the blaze.

In total, 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were at the scene from Stanmore, Mill Hill, Willesden, and West Hampstead fire stations.

The incident also forced the detour of bus routes 83 and 302.

An LFB spokesperson confirmed that the cause of the fire is now under investigation.
