He was on a training ride on Wednesday (August 27) when the accident occurred and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Toulon on the French Riviera.
A statement on Froome’s official X (formerly known as Twitter) profile page today (Thursday, August 28) revealed the news.
It read: “Chris was airlifted to hospital in Toulon yesterday following a serious training crash (no other cyclists or vehicles were involved).

“Fortunately Chris is stable and did not sustain any head injuries, however, scans have confirmed a pneumothorax, five broken ribs and a lumbar vertebrae fracture, for which he will undergo surgery this afternoon.
“We will update on Chris’ condition following surgery.”
Plenty of people sent their best wishes to Chris in the replies to the X post, as one person posted: “Oh Froomey, I am SO upset to see this bad news Hoping surgery goes well and you recover well and are soon up and about again.”
Another said: “Get well soon. Lucky you with such a kind hearted and caring team.”
