The council began its search to replace its most senior officer after current chief Jenny Rowlands announced in January that she would be stepping down.
Jon Rowney, who is currently Camden’s executive director of corporate services, has been recommended to take the reins in July.
The council will be asked to approve Mr Rowney’s appointment at a meeting on May 22.
Camden Council leader Cllr Richard Olszewski said: “When we began the search for our next chief executive, I was looking for a visionary, purpose-led leader, someone who shares our values and vision, leads with compassion, curiosity and courage, and is committed to continued learning.
“Jon embodies all these great qualities, and I’m proud that we have someone of his calibre set to be leading our council.”
Mr Rowney has been with Camden since 2015, first as director of finance and then as executive director of corporate services.
He has led the development and delivery of Camden’s financial strategy.
Mr Rowney is a trustee for domestic violence support charity Refuge and leads the council’s mission for ending violence and abuse against women and girls, including domestic violence and abuse.
Cllr Olszewski also praised the contributions of Ms Rowlands over the six years of her leadership.
Ms Rowlands, who joined the council in 2015 and became chief executive in 2019, will leave her role at the end of the summer.
In a statement, she paid tribute to the organisation, the borough’s residents, councillors and the officers she worked with.
She said: “It has been the privilege of my working life to be the chief executive at the London Borough of Camden.
“It is an amazing place where residents, partners, elected members, and our fantastic staff come together to care for each other, challenge injustice, and deliver great services.”
