Kiera Baker-Heffernan, who has a learning difficulty, social, and emotional challenges, and autism spectrum disorder, has made great strides since joining the employability course at Barking & Dagenham College.
Initially apprehensive about new surroundings, she found them intimidating, but her drive and commitment to learning soon shone through.
The college’s supportive, patient environment helped Kiera’s confidence grow.
Over time, staff say she has become an active participant in tutorials, asking insightful questions and applying her knowledge with growing independence.
Her friendly nature and creativity have been recognised by classmates, who value her as an integral part of the group.
Kiera’s highlight came when she baked a Christmas cake for her classmates, demonstrating her attention to detail and blossoming self-assurance.
The task and the appreciation it drew filled her with pride.
Kiera’s support and achievement mentor Georgie Hutton said: “I am incredibly proud of Kiera’s progress and excited to see where her skills and confidence take her next, both here and at Barking & Dagenham College.”
