The water main burst on the corner of Roman Road and Sydney Road, in Muswell Hill, on Sunday morning (January 12).
The force of the water made a hole in the gas pipe, causing water to leak into the gas network, affecting thousands of homes and offices in Muswell Hill, Colney Hatch and Hornsey.
People had their water supply back by Sunday afternoon after Affinity Water fixed the pipe.
However 44 streets containing more than 3,000 homes had water in their gas pipes which had to be fixed.
Cadent Gas, which manages the UK’s gas emergency service, said more than 100 engineers and support staff were in the area to turn off the gas supply to each affected property.
Vicky Grieve, network director for Cadent in the East of England, said the company was making progress in its efforts to resolve the issue.
Teams were currently pumping out the water, which she said was a “significant operation”.
She said: “Unfortunately, getting water out of thousands of metres of gas pipes is going to take time, and we have to follow a methodical process to make sure we don’t cause further issues later.
“We are doing our best to resolve this as soon as we safely can.
“Our focus today [Tuesday] remains on completing the visits we must make to every home impacted – to turn off supply and make an assessment on the impact the water may have had on internal gas appliances.”
She said Cadent would not be able to restore gas supplies in some streets until every property was accessed to confirm the gas supply was off and checks had been done, therefore it was important people stayed at home to allow the engineers in or to leave a key with neighbours if they needed to go out.
She thanked neighbours for their patience and understanding and the “incredible kindness” shown to teams.
An incident customer centre has been set up at Freehold Community Centre, in Alexandra Road, for all those affected.
