The authority is currently consulting on initial proposals to reshape its local plan, a document which will provide a blueprint for planning decisions in the borough over the next 15 years.
According to the council, brownfield land will be prioritised for development between 2026 and 2041 in order to protect the borough’s green belt.
It comes just months after London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that he wanted to “actively explore” building on some of London’s green belt in a bid to fix the capital’s housing crisis.
This included building on land described as “grey belt” – effectively protected areas that do not contribute to green belt purposes.
At the time, Bexley and Bromley London Assembly member Thomas Turrell AM said that the Mayor’s plans “make nature less accessible for some of the poorest in society”.
But Bromley Council has said that its new local plan will ensure “grey belt” will only be considered “once all other options for meeting…development needs have been explored”.
The number of new homes the authority wants to be built in the borough will remain at 774 a year until 2029.
More new affordable housing should be for social rent, the authority added.
Sites for Bromley’s traveller community will also be allocated in the new planning document.
Full details of the exact locations of future developments have not yet been revealed, but are expected to be announced when a full draft local plan is published next year.
The council is also seeking to “strengthen existing policy requirements” for tall buildings.
It also aims to include a specific policy on HMOs, which are described as “important” but also a form of housing that can impact existing neighbours.
A nine-week consultation is currently under way on the initial document and will run until September 26.
Cllr Yvonne Bear, Bromley’s executive councillor for renewal, recreation and housing said: “We want as many local residents and businesses as possible to get involved and help shape the future of our borough.
“The feedback we receive at this stage can help guide our approach in creating a local plan that supports our ambitions for Bromley and protects the unique character of our borough, from the beautiful green spaces to thriving town centres and everything in between.”
