New research shows the borough ranks fifth in the country for low noise levels, minimal light pollution and limited environmental disruption.
Property company Sell House Fast analysed noise complaints, artificial light exposure, vacant homes, sewage works and greenhouse gas emissions to score every local authority in England and identify the calmest places to live.
In their findings, they discovered that Bromley is the most peaceful area in London and one of the quietest nationwide, performing more like a rural commuter belt district than a capital borough.
The borough recorded just four noise complaints per 1,000 people in the past year, far lower than most urban areas and one of the lowest figures in England.
Only 2.7 per cent of Bromley’s land registers at the brightest level of artificial light at night, meaning residents enjoy significantly darker skies than in the rest of London.
Researchers also found there are no sewage works per square kilometre anywhere in Bromley, which is pretty rare for such a large and highly populated borough.
Greenhouse gas emissions sit at 6.0 kt CO2e per km², placing Bromley among the lower-emitting local authorities included in the study.
The borough was awarded a sensory disturbance score of 2.73 out of 10, ranking it fifth overall.
Solihull topped the national list, followed by Wiltshire, Peterborough and South Gloucestershire.
Bromley is the only London borough to appear in the top 10, standing out as one of the quietest and least disturbed parts of the country despite being part of the capital’s outskirts.
