The authority, acting as the corporate trustee of a charitable trust tied to the property, intends to sell the freehold of the site.
This decision comes after the council decided to invest in a new library on Bromley High Street, which it believes will better serve the community.
The new library will replace the current one at the Churchill Theatre site, as the existing site no longer houses any statutory services.
In September 2024, an offer was accepted to secure the future of Bromley’s much-loved theatre.
However, according to the Public Notice Portal, the council believes that selling the site will allow a third party to invest in its future, ensuring its sustainability.
The theatre will continue to operate as usual after the sale.
Under the terms of the charitable scheme, the proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase land for purposes outlined in the Technical and Industrial Institutions Act 1892.
The council has invited any members of the public who wish to comment on the proposed sale to do so by 5pm on April 28.
Comments should be addressed to Paul McCarthy, Strategic Property, London Borough of Bromley, Bromley Civic Centre, Churchill Court, 2 Westmoreland Road, Bromley, BR1 1AS.
The notice of the proposed sale was published on April 2, in accordance with Section 121(2) of the Charities Act 2011.
The property includes Churchill Theatre, Central Library and Offices, and 110–118a High Street, Bromley.
The site is marked in bold on a plan available for download at the bottom of the council’s notice page.
