The works were approved by the council’s Environment Committee last Thursday on March 13 and will see millions invested in improving road surfaces in a bid to tackle wear and tear, reduce potholes, and improve travel conditions for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
According to council documents the budget for the planned maintenance programme includes £2.5 million in capital funding, with an additional £1.479 million coming from a Department for Transport grant.
Officials say the investment will focus on roads with the highest priority, aiming to prevent more costly repairs in the future and minimise disruption for residents.
Bromley’s road network spans 547 miles of carriageways and 885 miles of footways.
Maintaining these roads is crucial not just for safety but also for the local economy, ensuring reliable routes for businesses and commuters.
While the council is responsible for safety repairs on main roads, resurfacing and reconstruction works have traditionally been funded by Transport for London (TfL).
However, reduced TfL funding in recent years has led the council to prioritise road maintenance within its own budget.
Bromley Council has spent £480,000 on pothole repairs and compensation in three years – with 116 claims amounting to £135,420.50 in the last year alone.
In figures revealed through FOIs submitted by Accident Claims Advice, Bromley Council was the second highest in London for pothole damage claims, with 636 filed since 2022.
Only Barnet Council had more claims, with 1,814 in the same period.
Of the £480,000 spent in Bromley, £351,666 was spent on repairs, and £135,000 was used for damage claims compensation.
