Police were called to Ford Lane, near Brittons Academy, on Tuesday (March 25) at 2.50pm to reports of a woman alleged to be holding the two sharp items.
She was detained at the scene under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.
The academy has stated it did not need to go into lockdown procedures as this was at the end of the school day and staff liaised with police on the ground.
Students were helped to get back home in the affected area and the incident was contained by police, the academy said.
Claire Whiley, principal of the academy said: “Senior staff at the academy became aware of an incident in the local area which police were dealing with.
“This was after the end of the school day and the academy was not, at any point, put into a lockdown situation.
Senior leaders at the academy, on duty in the community as is usual practice, liaised with police on the ground to add support for any students on their way home in the affected area.
“The incident was contained effectively by local police and did not require further action from the academy’s staff.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 2.50pm on Tuesday (March 25) to reports of a woman alleged to be in possession of a knife and scissors in Ford Lane, Rainham.
“Officers attended and detained the woman nearby.
“She was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital.”
