According to PA, more than 100 people protesting with Stand Up to Racism gathered outside the Britannia Hotel yesterday evening (August 8).
A similar number of counter-protesters waving Union flags and St George’s Cross flags were also seen on the pavement opposite the hotel.
Metropolitan Police said that they issued an order requiring people to remove face coverings at the demonstration.
One person protesting against the use of the hotel by asylum seekers was arrested after a bottle was thrown at officers.
A member of the opposing protest group was arrested after allegedly failing to remove a face covering.
The force said: “We have imposed conditions using the Public Order Act to prevent serious disorder at the protests in Canary Wharf.
“The group protesting against the use of the hotel by asylum seekers have been instructed to remain in front of the blue hoarding on the pavement opposite the Britannia Hotel.”
Shortly after 9pm, police said that the majority of protestors had left Canary Wharf.
Officers are expected to be deployed in Canary Wharf again tomorrow (August 10) in anticipation of further protests.
