Irene Webb, 50, of Norman Crescent in Brentwood appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court today (October 21).
Police were called to a flat on Norman Crescent with concerns for the welfare of a 19-year-old man.
Officers attended with paramedics but he was found dead inside the property.
The identity of the victim is not yet known.
Webb was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder.
Detective Inspector James Holmes said: “This continues to be a complex investigation into an incident with a very upsetting set of circumstances.
“We will continue to provide updates where we can, balancing our duty to inform the public with the need to maintain the integrity of our investigation and ensure the welfare of a devastated family.
“I would continue to please call for speculation to be avoided, out of respect for those who suffered an awful loss mere days ago.”
Webb was remanded in custody until her next hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on October 22.
