Miles Sekai, of Brent Cross, was due to face trial accused of murder this month, but on Monday (January 13) he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.
The 23-year-old denied murder and his pleas were accepted by the Crown.
Mr Fowler, of Hamilton Drive in Harold Wood, was found badly hurt in the early hours of February 27.
It was later revealed he had gone to the station to pick up a newspaper when Sekai beat him to death.
British Transport Police (BTP) were called at 4.30am that day after a station staff member saw an injured man lying on the ground outside the station.
Bernard was declared dead at the scene.
Sekai will be sentenced on April 4 and faces a possible hospital order.
A forensic post-mortem examination gave his caused of death as severe traumatic head injuries.
Bernard’s family had described him as a “dearly loved brother, father and grandfather” who had lived in the area for 20 years.
“The family are devastated by the news of his death,” they said.
