They run The Big Green Hub in King Edward VII Park, Wembley, which has landed a grant from a ‘Community Heroes’ fund set up by a chain of builders’ merchants.
“Our Park hub needs some cosmetic improvements,” Joanne Watson from the Big Green Hub explained.
“The money is a real help for our volunteers who have created a movement that makes a difference to people’s lives.”
The Green Hub project helps reduce people’s social isolation with education activities, community mornings, salsa dancing sessions, guided walks and a book club.
Its Wembley premises are being extended for activities to reach more people in the London boroughs of Brent and neighbouring Barnet, Camden, Harrow and Westminster.
The money comes from Selco Builders Warehouse, which has a Stanmore store at Canons Park and one at Staples Corner on the North Circular Road.
Some 40 organisations are being given £1,000 grants to spend at their local store over the next eight months.
Simon Humpage from Selco said: “The Big Green Hub stood out because of its valuable work in and around Wembley.”
The Community Heroes fund was relaunched for a fifth year running with £57,500 in the kitty. A £10,000 top prize is up for grabs, with second and third prizes of £5,000 and £2,500.
Groups supporting neighbourhood communities can apply online for the next round of grants at the “selcobw.com” website’s “community-heroes” page, nominations open until September.
