St Columba’s Catholic Boys’ School on Halcot Avenue has been praised for maintaining high standards and fostering a caring and inclusive community, following an inspection on November 26 and 27, 2024.
Led by headteacher Dave Evans and operating under the South East London Catholic Academy Trust, St Columba’s sets high expectations for learning, behaviour and attendance.
Inspectors noted that “pupils behave with courtesy and respect” and are proud of their achievements.
They added that pupils “take pride in all they do” and respond well to the school’s high expectations by attending regularly and punctually.
All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), benefit from an ambitious and well-structured curriculum.
The school’s specially resourced provision includes bases for pupils with speech, communication and language difficulties as well as those with complex needs.
This ensures all pupils are supported and well-prepared for their next steps.
Inspectors commended the school’s efforts, stating that these pupils “flourish and are treated with respect by all members of the school community.”
Pupils take pride in being part of the school, aspiring to embody its values and follow the example of alumni who have achieved significant milestones such as doctorates, entrepreneurial success and international sports accolades.
Inspectors reported that alumni actively contribute to the school, noting, “Alumni return to speak at assemblies and careers events and contribute to the school by participating in the governing body.”
The school is also celebrated for its focus on pupils’ broader development.
A rich array of extracurricular activities including field trips, museum visits and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme complements the academic curriculum.
Pupils expressed pride in their roles as leaders, with inspectors observing that initiatives promoting mental health, empathy and responsibility help them “develop as responsible, resilient individuals.”
While the school’s curriculum is thoughtfully designed and delivered by staff with strong subject expertise, inspectors identified some inconsistencies in assessment.
The report said that “this means some pupils can miss out on key elements of knowledge and cannot link their learning to the bigger picture.”
Safeguarding arrangements at St Columba’s were found to be effective, with pupils reporting confidence in the support provided by staff.
Inspectors also noted that the school fosters strong, trusting relationships, reflected in the pupils’ positive attitudes.
One pupil said: “St Columba’s does not tolerate misbehaviour because we would not get a good education.”
Leaders and governors have been commended for their efforts in driving improvements across the school.
Staff expressed pride in their work environment, reporting that “leaders are sensitive to their workload and well-being.”
