The council is set to install 70 new signs across the borough, starting in mid-June, in a bid to deter illegal dumping and make it easier for residents to report offenders.
These signs will remind culprits of the severe fines they face and feature a QR code for quick and easy reporting.
The council is determined to place these signs in the borough’s most affected areas, using data to guide their decisions.
Many will also be stationed around mini recycling sites.
Councillor Richard Diment, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We will not tolerate any form of fly-tipping in this borough, and those caught dumping waste can expect to be caught and fined.
“We need local people to work with us to keep our borough clean and free of rubbish, and I hope these new signs will make it easier for residents to report this criminal behaviour which only serves to blight our community.”
Bexley sees an average of over 4,000 fly-tipping reports each year.
The council has responded by increasing fixed penalty notices for offenders from £400 to £1,000.
The council believes signs like these have proven effective in reducing fly-tipping incidents in other areas.
Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of fly-tipping quickly and easily to the council via fixmystreet.com or by emailing areasupportteam@bexley.gov.uk.
They are asked to note as many details as possible, including vehicle registration, type, any company names/logos, time of offence, and descriptions and numbers of people involved.
If possible, residents are also urged to provide video footage.
The council is optimistic that the new measures will help keep Bexley a cleaner, greener, and safer place to live.
