The proposal will see the vacant property at 100 Mickleham Road in St Paul’s Cray demolished and its site redeveloped to provide a mix of one to three-bedroom homes.
The two-storey building complex set to be demolished was formerly a care home for the elderly and until last year, a temporary accommodation location.
Known as Bellegrove, the site has been vacant since April 2024 due to building safety concerns.
The 68 new homes will be contained within an H-shaped building ranging from four to five storeys; 13 of the units will be one-bedroom supported living accommodation for older residents, which will be wheelchair accessible, and the remaining 55 will be social rented flats.
Alongside the provision of new homes, the redevelopment of the Bellegrove site will see the construction of an outdoor children’s play space, 20 car parking spaces and 118 cycle parking spaces.
Twelve trees will be removed as part of the plans, but 29 new trees will be planted.
The Bellegrove project is part of Bromley Council’s Bromley Homes for Bromley People initiative and it is the eighth proposal in the scheme to receive planning approval.
It was approved by the council’s Development Control Committee on September 2.
The committee’s Chair, Cllr Alexa Michael, said: “This is a prime example of how Bromley Council can deliver much-needed local housing on sites that are appropriate for Bromley Borough.
“I am pleased that the Development Control Committee was able to approve the application.
“It greatly enhances the use of this site with an appropriate design for the local area.”
The most recently completed Bromley Homes for Bromley People housing project was in West Wickham in August when 26 homes for social rent were built by West Wickham Library.
Commenting on the Bellegrove approval, Cllr Yvonne Bear, Bromley’s Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said: “This is welcome news that will allow us to now move at pace to deliver these much-needed homes, joining a number of active and recently completed developments from the council across the borough.
“As well as reducing our housing costs, these developments enhance our local housing supply, delivering Bromley Homes for Bromley People.”
Construction on the Bellegrove development is expected to begin in the New Year, with Bromley Council hoping to complete it by late 2027.
As well as this, Bromley Homes for Bromley People is delivering homes in Orpington, Bromley and Beckenham.
