Liam Conlon, Labour’s MP for Beckenham and Penge, teamed up with R.A.M.P (Real Access Makes Progress), a group of local residents, to hand out accessibility awards to Beckenham High Street businesses.
These accolades, named “Star Awards”, celebrate local businesses for their efforts in creating a more welcoming and accessible environment for all community members.
The awards are based on criteria such as a “welcoming atmosphere”, “easy step-free access”, and, where appropriate, “accessible toilet facilities”.
Beckenham Rotary Club and the Ravensbourne Valley and West Beckenham Residents Associations have also thrown their support behind the initiative.
R.A.M.P members said: “We are incredibly proud of the progress Beckenham businesses are making towards greater accessibility.
“These awards are a small token of our appreciation for their efforts, and we hope they encourage even more establishments to consider how they can better serve all members of our community.”
The first “Star Awards” already adorn some shop windows on Beckenham High Street, with more set to be awarded in the upcoming months.
Mr Conlon said: “It’s fantastic to see the dedication of R.A.M.P and the positive response from our local businesses.
“A truly accessible high street benefits everyone, and these awards highlight the steps being taken to ensure Beckenham is welcoming for all.
“It is vital to recognise businesses ensuring step-free access and accessible toilets for customers.
“Celebrating these businesses today raises awareness and encourages others to ensure they are welcoming to all local residents in Beckenham and Penge.”
Mr Conlon also said he is working with businesses on other high streets in the constituency to adopt the same awards and foster an inclusive environment.
