Announced to coincide with World Homelessness Day, the funding is part of an £84 million package set to be distributed across England.
The borough’s allocation comes through the Supporting Children Experiencing Homelessness programme, part of the wider Homelessness Prevention Grant.
The money will be used to improve access to essential facilities and services for families living in temporary accommodation.
This includes providing laundry services, Wi-Fi, storage, and travel assistance to help keep children in school.
The targeted support aims to improve the quality of life for children while their families remain in need.
The £84 million package also includes £69.9 million for the Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grant, £3 million for the Rough Sleeping Drug and Alcohol Treatment Grant, and £200,000 for the Voluntary, Community and Frontline Sector Grant.
Barking and Dagenham’s funding is part of £10.9 million being distributed to councils with the highest pressures to improve outcomes for children in temporary accommodation across England.
The Government’s additional funding aims to help councils prevent homelessness, reduce rough sleeping, and improve the quality of life for families in temporary accommodation.
