They went from the drawing board at Barking & Dagenham College’s East London Institute of Technology to building the machines before fine-tuning them ready to race.
It was all videoed by other students on college media courses right through from the design and assembly stage to the race itself to document the process.
“The whole college got involved,” head of engineering Natasha Arazi said. “This was a showcase of our students’ talent, teamwork and heart.”

Students on creative courses designed bodywork, while carpentry trainees made the podium.
The race itself was organised by sports students who managed timings and all safety measures.
The campus field was laid out with a go-kart track with twists and turns to keep the drivers on their mettle.
Every lap helped raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, with £400 generated.
