The beloved character will appear in a new film that brings the classic children’s character into the present day.
The original TV series, which aired in 1974, featured just 13 episodes but became a staple of British childhood through frequent repeats.
A poll in 1999 named it the nation’s favourite children’s show of all time.
Emily Firmin, daughter of original co-creator Peter Firmin and who was the girl in the original series, said: “Bagpuss was an integral part of my childhood.
“To me he wasn’t just a character on the screen, he was a friend who taught me about kindness, care, and imagination.
“To see our most magical cat return now is incredibly moving and I’m thrilled that new fans will have the chance to discover him, and that his magic will live on and be shared with the next generation.”
The upcoming film will be the first new Bagpuss production since the original series and is currently in development.
Producers say the story will combine live action and animation while staying true to the charm of the original.
Bagpuss, along with his companions Professor Yaffle and Madeleine the rag doll, will awaken in modern-day Britain for a new adventure.
The project is being developed in collaboration with the estates of the show’s creators, Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin.
The film is being produced by Threewise Entertainment, a Birmingham-based company behind Nickelodeon’s Rock Island Mysteries.
A release date is targeted for 2027.
In the original series, Bagpuss came to life in a shop window whenever his owner, Emily, brought him a lost or broken object to examine.
Each episode began with the words: “the most important, the most beautiful, the most magical saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world.”
