A fault on a train in the Lake District has damaged overhead electrical wires near Oxenholme, meaning all lines are closed.
Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express are advising people not to travel north of Preston, including on trains from London Euston.
Avanti West Coast services between Glasgow Central, Edinburgh and London Euston are facing 90 minute delays or cancellations.
“Major disruption” is expected to last until the end of the day as Network Rail works on site to assess the damage to the overhead electric wires.

“If you are due to travel between Glasgow Central / Edinburgh and Preston today (Wednesday 3 September), then you can use your existing ticket via the same route until the end of the day tomorrow (Thursday 4 September).
