Transport for London (TfL) has revealed that the station will close from May 31, and will not reopen until spring next year. Campaigners have called for the four escalators to be replaced for years after they repeatedly failed, forcing passengers to walk up 121 steps or use what some locals have described as the “worst lift in London”. The project will cost £4 million to carry out, delivering what TfL says are “state-of-the-art, energy efficient” escalators. Stuart Guy, who was born with cataracts and has lived with severe sight loss for most of his life due to glaucoma, could be one of the many disabled people in the UK impacted by proposed cuts to welfare spending. The airport’s community fund, which awards £75,000 annually, has allocated £48,165 to 17 charities and organisations this month. Each successful applicant will receive a grant of up to £3,000 and groups from across Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets are in line to benefit.
