A Thames Water spokesperson said: “We’re sorry that your tap water isn’t flowing properly at the moment because of this. “We’re working hard on site to isolate the broken pipe and returning the water supply to the area. “We’ve also got water tankers in the area to push water into the pipe network and get your taps flowing again. “We know how disruptive it is…

Almost exactly 20 years ago, Gerardine Quaghebeur, who lived in Wootton near Abingdon, was sitting on an underground carriage near Aldgate station when a terrorist detonated a bomb. It was one of four explosions that day and Dr Quaghebeur’s actions on July 7, 2005, would lead some to call her a hero in what became known as the 7/7 attacks. However, her husband has said “the shock and trauma of it never left her” as he paid tribute to his wife of 30 years, who passed away last month on June 19. Peter Richards spoke at a Wootton Parish Council (near…

Property developer Galliard revealed its initial plans to transform the disused centre into a residential development in May after purchasing the 6.74 acre site from Bromley Council for £13.5 million in April. Bromley Palace, the Grade II listed manor house next to the former Civic Centre site, was included in the sale but Bromley Palace Park remains in public ownership. Bromley Council discussed Galliard’s plans to convert two of the centre’s office buildings—the Stockwell and North Buildings—into flats at a meeting of its Plans Sub-Committee No. 1 on June 26. The committee took up the recommendation of Bromley planners and refused…
There had been reports of a power surge, but his superiors were concerned and wanted him to attend the scene with his explosives detection dog Ross. “You always think – it’s just going to be another false alarm,” he said. At the time, he was unaware that three bombs had been detonated on the London Underground, killing 39 people. “I was in my van thinking I would cut across Tavistock Square and that’s when I saw the bus,” he added. “The roof had been blown off, and there was some debris blowing around in the wind.” Just moments earlier, a…
His shift in the emergency department at the Royal Free Hospital that morning in 2005 had been uneventful, until a warning of a major incident came through from London Ambulance Service. Within half an hour, the department was cleared and at 10.30am, around ninety minutes after the first bomb had exploded, patients started to arrive at the Hampstead hospital. “These patients had to witness what can only be described as the closest place to hell on earth,” he said. “A lot of them had really, really horrific injuries and shrapnel wounds – people had lost upper limbs. “Those who could…

Lewis Wakenell-Stewart (Image: Natalie Wakenell) With the recent hot weather and an upcoming school trip, Lewis decided it was time for a haircut, but wanted to turn it into an act of kindness at the same time. Caroline May, Lewis’ grandmother, told Your Local Guardian: “Lewis has never really had a proper haircut. “He would only let myself or his mum trim the fringe, and he just let it grow. “It’s been acting like a blanket for him. “We spoke to…
