The silver birch trees stand outside Park House, home to Monkey Puzzle Nursery opposite East Finchley Station, where developer Places for Barnet is set to replace the nursery and build 75 new homes. However Roger Chapman, chair of Friends of Cherry Tree Wood, said the developer was showing “utter contempt” for the value placed on the trees. He added retaining them would be in keeping with Barnet Council’s local plan, which sets out planning policy as well as sites for housing and employment, and states that the area with the birches should be maintained and improved. Mr Chapman claimed that…
The station, which is served by the Liberty line, District line and c2c services was listed by the government among 50 other stations across the UK that have been earmarked for step-free access upgrades. Currently, there is step-free access to five of the six platforms at the station, but not to platform six, where Liberty line trains run to Romford. It is likely that any upgrade of the station would see lifts or ramps installed at this platform. Last year, Julia Lopez, MP for Hornchurch and Upminster, called on the government to commit to improving access to platform six at Upminster…

The driver, another man in his 50s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and remains in police custody. At the moment, the courier adheres to the current one-price-goes-anywhere principle of the Universal Service Obligation (USO), which means it must deliver post six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. However, new reforms will allow the firm to stop delivering second-class mail on Saturdays and, instead, deliver it on an alternative mid-week day. First-class stamps will remain unaffected by this change, with letters using these still being delivered six days a week. We’re reforming the UK’s postal service so it delivers what people need:✅ First Class still next-day Mon-Sat📆 Second Class: every other weekday🛑 New delivery targets to cut long delays💷 2nd class stamp…
Ruth Ellis shot her lover David Blakely outside the Hampstead pub in April 1955, and just three months later was executed at Holloway Prison. Although she confessed to the murder, there were extenuating circumstances – with Ellis enduring physical and verbal abuse from Blakely, and a miscarriage 10 days before the shooting. Enfield Council is holding a public consultation on planned parking charges at the Forty Hall Estate public car park to improve traffic management and enhance environmental sustainability. The proposed parking rates range from £2 for up to one hour to £10 for over four hours, and will apply from 9am until 8pm each day. Parking will remain free for periods of less than 30 minutes. Dr Martin Dearne, director of excavations and research for Enfield Archaeological Society, which conducts digs at the historic Elsyng Palace site at Forty Hall, warned the charges could mean the end of a 20-year research programme.…
