National Rail confirmed trains between Reading and London Paddington may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes at around 7.20am today (August 5). This is due to a points failure at West Drayton Station. Lines have reopened although disruption is still expected until 12.30 today. The problem is affecting two of the four lines between Reading and London Paddington. National Rail are having to reduce the train service through the area to avoid congestion. It comes just weeks after Lewisham Council called for extended hours on the DLR to improve transport connections in south east London. Amid uncertainty over funding for a Bakerloo line extension to Lewisham, the local authority said that a night time service on the DLR “could be delivered through a lesser level of investment”. “The council believes that this could be achieved within the confines of the existing DLR network – possibly without the need for signalling improvements,” the council said. “The only possible barrier to implementing this service improvement is capacity of on-board staff.” Although the DLR is automated,…

Violence has struck streets all over the capital time and time again in 2025, with terrifying gun crimes occurring throughout the past eight months. Today (August 5) marks the sixth fatal shooting victim this year. The first reported person to die from a shooting this year was in Stockwell in March. The council has recruited nine more enforcers, now totalling 45 — with five more to be hired shortly. The number out and about on patrol at any one time is now 24, Monday to Saturday. Council leader Cllr Ergin Erbil has been out with the officers. “We are stepping-up patrols where we see repeated parking offences,” Cllr Erbil said. “Our officers often face verbal and sometimes physical when carrying out their job.
