The superstore in Anchor Retail Park has closed its doors for the final time today (September 7).
The news was revealed in July due to an increase in rent, leaving the site “financially unviable”.
The closure has split opinions and several readers commented on our Facebook page this week sharing their thoughts.
Rafia Khatun wrote: “I can’t believe it!
“Sainsbury’s and Tesco are expensive… I’m going to miss Asda’s deli… it was so convenient.”
Laura Hills noted: “Not going to have any shops left at this rate.”
Jane Corrigan said: “Such a shame – only expensive metros left now.
“I usually had very nice helpful staff, picked up a lot of uniform there, and food basics were cheap.”
Other readers shared contrasting evaluations compared to Jane, such as Paul Price who wrote: “That store is horrible, people fighting to get their shopping on the weekends and a nightmare to get in and out by car, probably one of the worst ones around.”
Aggie Dziubek said: “Asda is now one of more expensive stores and really the quality of everything just went down!
“Barely any lower prices or promotions… it used to be my fav shop, now I can’t afford it and rather go Waitrose or Marks and Spencer.”
Stuart Dunn and Paul Chikor shared the same view.
“Won’t miss it,” wrote Stuart.
“Sure it won’t be missed – too overpriced too,” said Paul.
Asda was contacted to respond to the critical comments but referred us back to a previous statement from a spokesperson.
They said: “Unfortunately, our Stepney Green supermarket will be closing on Sunday, September 7.
“This decision follows new terms proposed by the landlord, which included a significant rent increase that would have made the store financially unviable.
“We’d like to thank all the customers who have shopped in store over the years, and our colleagues, who have worked hard to continue to serve the local community.
“We understand that this news may be disappointing, however we want to reassure customers that they will be able to find all of their favourite products and Asda’s outstanding value at our nearby Isle of Dogs superstore.”
A new Asda Express store is set to open in Limehouse station later this year, just over a mile away from the soon-to-close superstore.
Some readers have started thinking ahead to what might replace the superstore.
Gareth Johnson said: “Aldi would be good.”
Akik Haroon suggested a “Smyths Toys.”
John Boyle’s guess was a Wetherspoon pub, while Garry Cridge predicted “flats and more flats”.
