Al’s Pie & Mash in High Street was one of many businesses across Havering to be visited by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the month of March.
Inspectors review the handling, storage, and preparation of food, how food safety is managed, and the cleanliness of facilities.
Of all 40 businesses to receive a visit, just two received a rating of one – one of them being Al’s Pie & Mash.
The FSA visited the store on March 3 to rate the premises across the three inspection categories.
Hygienic food handling at Al’s was found to be “generally satisfactory”, relating to the preparation, handling, cooking, re-heating and storing of food.
However, the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building and the management of food safety was reported to be in need of “major improvement”.

This concerns the hand washing facilities, layout, and ventilation of the venue, and the systems and checks a business has in place to ensure food safety.
The FSA also observes any evidence of staff food safety knowledge.
Ratings are not a guide to food quality.
We approached Al’s Pie & Mash for a response and were told it is in the process of arranging a re-inspection but could not give a further comment at this time.
