Al’s Pie & Mash in High Street is now proudly displaying a five rating after being visited by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on April 2.
The turnaround to the highest possible score followed a previous inspection conducted in March saw it given a one, prompting the eatery to book a re-visit.
The rating is front and centre on the restaurant’s door (Image: Jason Pizzey) The FSA make its ratings based on three inspection categories which include hygienic food handling, management of food safety, and the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and venue.

Al’s Pie & Mash’s management of food safety was observed to be “very good” at the most recent inspection, with systems and checks in place and evidence of staff knowledge of food safety.
According to the FSA, “the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future”.
The preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of food at the pie and mash shop has been rated “good”, along with the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities.
