Al’s Pie & Mash, High Street, Hornchurch set to close

Speculation circulated online this week around the potential closure of Al’s Pie & Mash and a worker at the shop confirmed to the Recorder that the business will closing for good.

No further information or comment has been provided to us by the shop.

A sign was pictured in its window and posted into a public pie and mash Facebook group by another staff member.

It reads: “It is with great sadness after 60 years of trading pie and mash, we will close our doors for the final time on Saturday, September 27.

“We would like to thank all our customers and friends for your continued support but unfortunately we can no longer make the numbers work.

“Massive thanks.”

In March, Al’s Pie & Mash was handed a food hygiene rating of one after the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building and the management of food safety was reported to be in need of “major improvement”. 

But as of April 2, the shop could be seen displaying a rating of five after being revisited by the FSA.

The management of food safety was observed to be “very good” at the most recent inspection, with systems and checks in place and evidence of staff knowledge of food safety.
