Havering Council has put forward plans for a host of road safety measures along A1306 New Road by Wennington Road as part of a crash reduction scheme.
This comes after a study conducted by the council revealed that up to 1,700 vehicles per hour use this road, with speeds of up to 60mph “regularly” recorded – 20mph more than the speed limit.
Analysis of collision records also found that there have been a total of nine personal injury accidents (PIAs) recorded along A1306 New Road between Lambs Lane and Sandy Lane.
Of these, one was fatal, two occurred in wet conditions and one happened after dark.
The council did not provide a timescale for when its study took place or for how long.
The proposed scheme includes installing a centre island along A1306 between Wennington Road and Sandy Lane.
Rumble strips and 40mph vehicle-activated signs are also to be installed along the road, north and south of Wennington Road, to combat speeding.
Double yellow lines are included in the proposals, just north and south of Wennington Road, part of Wennington Road and the hotel access road.
An existing slippery hazard sign is to be removed just south of Wennington Road, while an existing Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) sign is to be relocated to reduce clutter and avoid confusion.
Part of the plan also includes cutting back tree branches opposite Wennington Road so that road signs can be clearly seen.
