Wingletye Lane has been hit with roadworks after a gas escape near its junction with Southend Arterial Road (A127), with Cadent Gas teams carrying out emergency repairs at the site.
The issue was first reported on January 12, however Cadent has confirmed the works could continue for days.
A spokesperson for Cadent said: “We are carrying out emergency repair work on a gas escape on Wingletye Lane.
“We hope to be completed before January 20.
“We have worked with the local highways authority to put in place the most appropriate traffic management system to reduce disruption as much as possible, however, this is emergency work and needs to be completed without delay.”
The spokesperson added that the permit for the lane closure – the current traffic management system being used – runs out on January 20.
Causeway one.network warned drivers that delays are “likely” while the gas repairs are carried out.
While Wingletye Lane is not one of the designated diversion routes for the Gallows Corner project, it is still a frequently used cut through as motorists try to avoid the closure further along the A127.
Above Gallows Corner, Noak Hill Road – which forms a significant stretch of the northern diversion route – is shut until January 21 due to water works.
