Essex Police were called to junction 11 of the A12, which connects to the M25 at Brook Street Roundabout, shortly after 5.30am this morning (January 19) after “concerns for the welfare of a woman”.
Officers found the woman, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, she died at the scene.
A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman close to J11 of the A12 shortly after 5.30am on Sunday 19 January.
“A woman was found and sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, she died at the scene.
“Her family have been informed and are being supported. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The Recorder understands that there are not believed to be suspicious circumstances at this time.
Police closed a stretch of the A12 southbound, from its junction with the M25 until junction 12 at Brentwood, shortly after the incident.
According to National Highways, the road reopened just after 10am this morning and “no significant delays” were reported following this.
