Football Fest would pull in fans for live match screenings, food stalls, drinks and music.
The plan is still being considered and needs council sign-off, with details yet to be confirmed.
Organisers say Football Fest is a festival-style fan park based on a similar event in Norway.
In a post on the event’s Instagram page, Football Fest would be ‘Drawing on the success of the original [Norwegian event] @fotballfesten concept where huge crowds gather around giant outdoor screens, music and food stalls in the heart of the city Football Fest aims to turn the Common into a vibrant fan park.’
The post says it will copy Norway’s fotballfesten idea, with big crowds around giant screens, live music and food stalls.
The plan comes as World Cup fever builds, with England and Scotland said to have already qualified for the tournament.
Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are still in the running to qualify.
But organisers face a headache because many games will kick off late at night, thanks to the North America time difference.
Some matches will start after midnight UK time, with the latest kick-off at 5am, though most will start at 8pm BST.
How it will work with those late kick-offs is still unclear.
Football Fest still needs council approval, and organisers have not yet announced dates.
If it goes ahead, expect giant screens, food stalls and live music.
Organisers want fans to follow the event’s Instagram page for updates.
