Plans have now been formally submitted to demolish the former Debenhams building in Market Place – and replace it with a hotel, flats and shops.
Computer-generated images produced alongside the planning application have revealed what the major development could look like, including from above and within Market Place itself.

An aerial view gives a sense of the scale of the project, showing the proposed 118-room hotel facing Market Place and two apartment buildings behind.
These blocks are planned to include 155 flats overall, split over a 12-storey and a 14-storey building.

From above, the proposed rooftop bar on top of the hotel can also been seen, as well as green roofs and the public plaza in between the two flat blocks.

The planning documents set out some intended uses for this commercial space, with a host of potential business types which could occupy these units.
This includes a wine bar, hair salon, cafe/grocers, record shop and a gym.

Another view from the side of the development shows part of the public square in more detail – named Swan Place – which is proposed to provide seating, landscaping and water features.
